Hungry females show stronger mating preferences

چکیده

Female mating decisions that are based on condition-dependent traits, such as male nutritional state, may be associated with a female’s own condition. In the swordtail fish, Xiphophorus birchmanni, females prefer the chemical cues of well-fed males to cues of food-deprived males. Here we show that this preference is significantly stronger in females when they were experimentally food deprived than when they were well fed. Our results suggest that if females have limited access to food resources, and are themselves food deprived, they will attend to cues indicating male nutritional condition more than when environmental conditions allow for greater access to food. Furthermore, not only is the slope of the preference function condition dependent but also, in all trials, the latency to respond to the presented stimuli was shorter in food-deprived females, suggesting that responsiveness to environmental cues is condition dependent as well. Under natural conditions, females of many species likely experience variation in resource availability. Thus, we predict that covariance between the strength of female preferences and resource availability may be widespread and may represent a common source of female preference variation within and between populations.

Mate choice in the face of costly competition

Studies of mate choice commonly ignore variation in preferences and assume that all individuals should favor the highest-quality mate available. However, individuals may differ in their mate preferences according to their own age, experience, size, or genotype. In the present study, we highlight another simple reason why preferences may differ: if there is costly competition for mates, the poor...

Social Variables Affecting Mate Preferences, Copulation and Reproductive Outcome in a Pack of Free-Ranging Dogs

Mating and reproductive outcome is often determined by the simultaneous operation of different mechanisms like intra-sexual competition, mating preferences and sexual coercion. The present study investigated how social variables affected mating outcome in a pack of free-ranging dogs, a species supposed to have lost most features of the social system of wolves during domestication. We found that...

Predicting preferences for sex acts: which traits matter most, and why?

Several dispositional traits have been examined in mating contexts by evolutionary psychologists. Such traits include life history strategy, sociosexuality, and the Big Five. Recently, scholars have examined the validity and predictive utility of mating intelligence, a new construct designed to capture the cognitive processes that underlie mating psychology. The current research employed a batt...

Sexual Selection and the Evolution of Female Choice.

A paradox for evolutionists has been the development in one sex, usually females, of preferences for mates possessing characters that impair survival. Darwin (1871) extensively documented cases of sexual selection in animals and showed that many of the most dramatic examples are attributable to female mating preferences operating in polygynous populations. But while he was untroubled to explain...

Low Mate Encounter Rate Increases Male Risk Taking in a Sexually Cannibalistic Praying Mantis

Male praying mantises are forced into the ultimate trade-off of mating versus complete loss of future reproduction if they fall prey to a female. The balance of this trade-off will depend both on (1) the level of predatory risk imposed by females and (2) the frequency of mating opportunities for males. We report the results of a set of experiments that examine the effects of these two variables...
